About WSET®

The Wine & Spirit Education Trust (WSET®) was founded in 1969 in London, England to provide high quality education and training in wines and spirits. Since then, WSET® has grown into the foremost international body in the field of wines and spirits education, with a suite of sought-after qualifications.

In addition to courses and qualifications for those in the 'trade', we have an increasing number of 'consumers', or enthusiasts, who attend courses. They may attend a course because of a wish to gain a formal qualification or simply a desire to enhance their knowledge of the ever-increasing variety of wines and spirits being produced in the world today.

WSET® works through a network of Approved Programme Providers around the world. These external Providers are rigorously checked to ensure that they deliver the high standard of teaching required to enable students to pass their WSET® qualification. Level 1 Certification

Foundation Certificate in Wines

This qualification aims to provide basic product knowledge and skills in the service and retail of wine to prepare a person for their first job in hospitality or retail. This course is also a good introductory first course for the wine enthusiast who wishes to be introduced in a structured way to wine styles, storing and serving of wine, plus food and wine matching.

The qualification introduces candidates to:

  • The main styles of wine
  • The characteristics of the major grape varieties
  • The WSET® Level 1 Systematic Approach to Tasting
  • Service and retailing of wine
  • The matching of food and wine

To gain the level 1 qualification, the candidates will be required to:

  • Complete and program of training
  • Successfully complete a multiple-choice paper of 30 questions and a portfolio of tasting notes

Level 2 Certification

Intermediate Certification in Wines and Spirits

The WSET® Intermediate Certificate is intended as vocational training in product knowledge for those employed in the drinks industry who have little previous knowledge of wines and spirits. The course is also appropriate for those not employed in the drinks industry but who have a serious interest in wine, and wish to broaden their knowledge in a structured way.

The course covers the wines and spirits of the world and is followed by a one-hour multiple choice examination. Wine tasting is a part of every class.

  • Level 2 Systematic Approach to Tasting and food and wine matching
  • Grape growing and wine making
  • Key wine and spirit-producing regions
  • Key grape varieties: Chardonnay, Sauvignon Blanc, Riesling, Merlot, Cabernet Sauvignon, Pinot Noir, Syrah and Grenache
  • Sparkling and sweet wines
  • Fortified wines and spirits plus liqueurs

Gérald Savigny

Gérald Savigny has been exposed to the world of wines and spirits at a very young age, while traveling with his father to visit winemakers and vineyards in the French regions of Bordeaux, Champagne, Loire Valley, and Cognac. He pursued this inclination and worked as a sommelier in London and Paris, which allowed him to travel extensively to vineyards and distilleries in Germany, Italy, Southern France, and Scotland. Aside from having been a wine trainer and consultant for hotels and restaurants in Abu Dhabi, Dubai, Seoul, Phnom Penh, and Siem Reap, Savigny has organized wine events with winemakers such as Roberto Anselmi and Pascal Jolivet. He has also conducted wine presentations and dinners for royalties and ambassadors. Gérald Savigny is a licensed Wine & Spirit Educator by the Wine & Spirit Education Trust (WSET®).
